You can always rely on the users of Reddit to dig deep into their favourite topics. While we wait to get our first proper glimpse of PlayStation 5 gameplay, then, here’s a fascinating tidbit: the Marvel’s Spider-Man tech demo which emerged last year demonstrating the speed of Sony’s next-gen system was based upon an “early, low-speed” development kit.
That’s according to Wired, who first reported on the demo a month or so before it emerged courtesy of a shaky cam social media post. If you never saw it, you can watch it below:
And here’s what Wired wrote about it: “Spidey stands in a small plaza. Cerny presses a button on the controller, initiating a fast-travel interstitial screen. When Spidey reappears in a totally different spot in Manhattan, 15 seconds have elapsed. Then Cerny does the same thing on a next-gen devkit connected to a different TV. (The devkit, an early ‘low-speed’ version, is concealed in a big silver tower, with no visible componentry.) What took 15 seconds now takes less than one: 0.8 seconds, to be exact.”
Obviously, the PS4 Pro is a little faster in the embedded example, but the PS5 loading time is identical, suggesting this is the same demo that Wired saw. It means that the next-gen console’s final devkit may be able to load the Insomniac Games developed open worlder even faster, which is just mind-boggling, isn’t it?

Why do you need reddit?
That's a one year old known news.
I dont get it
@JJ2 That was so close to being a haiku and now I’m disappointed.
Reporting Reddit?
That’s a one year old known news.
I do not get it.
Most people don't know that so bravo on reporting.
PS5 is sounding like the better console.
@nessisonett
The wind that blows
Is all that anybody knows.
I thought anyone who read the wired article when it first dropped would have known that if they used their eyes.
But good to make people aware who perhaps skim read the article at first!
More excited for load times on next generation games honestly.
far cry 5 and new dawn have the most infuriating load times. Fast travel takes ages, loading anything from far cry arcade takes even longer.
@JJ2 It's clearly said in the title, read more about what is devkit. They just figured that PS5 hardware is improved since that demo, which means today's PS5 devkit (year later) can probably do the same test even faster.
@Arnna HZD takes an age to load up too.
I am thinking about how PS4 Pro would work with the same tech? Like if they would re-engineer the old motherboard and add the same super-fast loading SSD and variable power frequency feature (which, as I understood from Cerny demonstration reduce heating). I quest it would be able to show more stuff on the screen a lot faster (like Spiderman demo) and with that to make games more versatile. It could be like a new PS4 Pro, the same CPU/GPU power (4.7 teraflops), almost the same price but with faster loading and without heating problems...
Imagine game story writer's nightmares where they must write over 2-3 more hours of content, because without constant loading it shows that their stories are shorter than average Hollywood movies 😂
@East76landS @Arnna @TheCrusty Juggler It's all about that pop Inn! Less of that is going to help gaming performance. So it's just not about loading screen.
Note to self.
Survive!!!
I use the load times to either make a cup of tea, or knock one out. What am I gonna do now!!?
It’s official! PS5 will be better than the PS4 Pro!
But will the games be better?
A Need for Speed aint my cup of tea..
@nenads
⁰'They just figured that PS5 hardware is improved since that demo, '
Wired article 16/04/2019:
'To demonstrate, Cerny fires up a PS4 Pro playing Spider-Man, a 2018 PS4 exclusive that he worked on alongside Insomniac Games. (He’s not just an systems architect; Cerny created arcade classic Marble Madness when he was all of 19 and was heavily involved with PlayStation and PS2 franchises like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and Ratchet and Clank.) On the TV, Spidey stands in a small plaza.

What is there to just figure ? They rely on Reddit to point out what they failed to read in the first place?
The video was made (posted) only a few weeks after the Wired article.
I'm hoping they show the ps5 running some older ps4 games like this in boost mode and highlight graphics improvements too. The next box simulated hdr and improvements for older games looked great, hope the ps5 covers some of that too.
Sure, but all of this is for nought when missing one key component. People seem to be obsessing over power to the point that they're forgetting what games consoles are all about, and the clue is in the name.
@nessisonett Very good haiku!
@Spoonman-2 Maybe play the game?
@nenads Unfortunately I doubt they would be able to do that. The whole SOC is engineered around the I/O so that there are no bottlenecks to the NVME SSD, Plus gen 4 PCI-E needs Zen 2 so at that point it wouldn't cost much less than the PS5.
I just can't get excited about a feature that has been around for 5 years in the PC gaming market. Its a must have feature not a trail blazer, some with dedicated sound processing hardware, every PC mother board has a sound chip and Xbox have had one all this gen. CPU/GPU does not sound great either, fixed power budget and reliance on overclocking will not make up for shortage of shader cores. Only thing i'm really happy about so far is the new controller has a lot of promise, and of course the games. Give me bloodbourne 2 and I will be a day buyer. I've been day 1 buyer ps2, ps3, ps4 and ps4 Pro but PS5 is going to need some good year one exclusive releases for me not to wait a year or so until they iron out the rough edges as it stands
@djlard that’s a bit of a stretch lol!
@Mythologue absolutely. My money is going towards Sony simply because they have (by some margin) the best exclusive games. It’s all about the games.
Not counting nintendo, they obviously have loads of stuff which won’t appear on any other console.
But yeah the choice between Sony and Microsoft is a very easy one.
I really don't get these refurbished articles. I guess it's slow news day and you still need clicks for obvious reasons. But it's just weird
@Arnna Yah! I can't wait to finally be able to fully enjoy Outer Worlds if they make it BC with PS5! lol
